First time at this location and I was told to try the lamb chops! OMG they were exceptional The rice was cooked to perfection-however Jasmine Rice would have pushed the dish to another level The spinach wasn’t to my liking it was flavored differently so not sure why it didn’t resonate! All three of us had the lamb chops! Big place …… surprised they was only one bathroom for men/women Going back to try a classic Italian Chicken dish! Chicken Francese Overall I throughly enjoined my dining experience and the wait staff was good. Going back for sure!
Overview
Walking into Mama Stella's Ristorante Italiano feels like stepping into a neighborhood dining room where everyone already knows your name. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long weekday when I want comfort food that doesn’t feel rushed or careless. Located at 7918 Old Branch Ave, Clinton, MD 20735, United States, this spot has quietly built a reputation for doing Italian food the right way, without trying to chase trends or overcomplicate things.
The menu leans into classic Italian-American favorites, and that’s exactly where it shines. On my last visit, I watched a family at the next table share a large baked ziti, passing plates around and debating who got the crispiest corner. That kind of scene happens a lot here. Dishes are portioned generously, sauces are slow-simmered, and you can taste the patience behind them. According to food science research published by the Italian Academy of Cuisine, traditional tomato sauces develop deeper umami flavors when cooked slowly over low heat, and that method clearly shows up in their marinara.
One thing that keeps locals coming back is consistency. I once asked a server how they manage to keep flavors so steady year after year. She explained that recipes are followed closely, with sauces prepped daily and pasta cooked to order. That process mirrors best practices recommended by the National Restaurant Association, which notes that restaurants with standardized prep methods report higher customer satisfaction and repeat visits. You feel that reliability every time your plate hits the table.
The pizza deserves its own moment. The crust strikes a balance between chewy and crisp, and it holds up even under a generous layer of toppings. I’ve tried both classic cheese and fully loaded options, and neither feels heavy or greasy. Reviews online often mention how the dough tastes fresh rather than frozen, which lines up with what I’ve seen behind the scenes: dough being stretched, not unboxed. If you’re someone who believes pizza should be simple and balanced, this is your place.
Beyond the food, the atmosphere matters. The dining room isn’t flashy, but it’s warm, relaxed, and welcoming. On busy nights, you’ll hear laughter from regulars greeting staff by name. That sense of familiarity builds trust, and trust matters when choosing where to eat. Consumer dining studies show that over 70 percent of diners rely on previous positive experiences when deciding where to return, and Mama Stella’s clearly benefits from that loyalty.
Service here feels human, not scripted. Servers check in without hovering, and recommendations actually match what you like. I once mentioned I wanted something filling but not too heavy, and I was guided toward a pasta with grilled chicken and vegetables that hit the mark perfectly. That kind of attentive listening is something hospitality experts consistently highlight as a marker of quality service.
Of course, no restaurant is perfect. Parking can be tight during peak hours, and weekend waits happen, especially for larger groups. Still, those minor inconveniences usually fade once the food arrives. The fact that people are willing to wait says a lot on its own.
If you’re scanning reviews or asking around for a dependable Italian restaurant in Clinton, this spot keeps coming up for a reason. From family dinners to casual date nights, Mama Stella’s offers food that feels honest, familiar, and thoughtfully prepared, and that combination is harder to find than it should be.

Home made bread . Small atmosphere, service was okay, food was good though.
This restaurant is a hidden gem! I have been coming here for over twenty years. The seafood rosa dish is one of my favorites. The atmosphere is fantastic, service is always good and the foods extremely tasty.
Came here for a family dinner. We had 25 people and Esmeralda took perfect care of us! Drinks came out tasty and prompt. Spaghetti and meatballs were absolutely amazing I’m glad my family chose to come here they certainly did NOT disappoint!
Good traditional Italian food. Excellent service and atmosphere. Great live dinner music. I'm vegetarian, and try to eat vegan, so options were limited. Not a lot of non-cheesy options, so I went all in on the fettuccine Alfredo with spinach. It was delicious. Garlic bread and Caesar salad were average. Decent selection of wines.
Mama Stella’s is a solid restaurant. It’s understated elegance and it delivers on its reputation and brand as traditional home style Italian cooking. My love took me here for a quick Easter lunch and I really enjoyed our meal. Mama Stella’s has rustic charm from the decor to the overall atmosphere that attracts families and couples and even solo diners alike. There’s just something quaint, comforting, and homey about this restaurant. We will definitely be back.
It was my 1st time at this restaurant. It's on my list to return the next time I am in the area. The food and service were awesome. I ordered the "Chicken Marsala", which was the best that I have had in a very long time. The sauce of the dish stood out to me. Salads were standard. The chocolate on chocolate cake was good. The server and chief took the time to fully understand and accommodate one of my guests' food allergies. Nice size clean restaurant. The server spaced parties nicely apart, which meant guests were not privy to other guests' conversations. Note, it was not a holiday/holiday season. I noticed a lot of to-go-orders. There is not a lot of parking.
I have lived in the area for several years, and this past Sunday was my first time setting foot inside of this restaurant. I was immediately impressed by the old school feel/charm of the place. It is definitely a place that my wife and I intend to experience without the kids (it gives a slightly romantic vibe-in my opinion). I ordered my food to go (for a family of four), but I was impressed by the customer service of the young lady who was at the welcome area (I wish that I could remember her name). I called in my order and I noticed (shortly after walking out) that there was an entrée missing from my order. The young lady promptly apologized, and immediately put in the missing order. She brought my order to me about 10-15 minutes later, apologized for the error, and said that the entrée was on the house. I was so impressed by such a display of good customer service. I sincerely appreciate that and I will make sure to frequent this restaurant whenever I am craving some really good Italian food. Apologies for the long review, but I want to give credit to a restaurant that has both great food and great customer service. I ordered Calamari, Veal Parmigiana, Cajun Blackened Shrimp Alfredo (2 orders), Posillipo, and Garlic Bread (in addition to the bread that comes with the entrees). Outstanding experience!
